Dovea Genetics Assist in the Import of Water Buffalo Genetics

The Mediterranean Water Buffalo is one of the most successful breeds of Buffalo worldwide. Through intensive selection and years of commitment to their breeding, the Mediterranean Water Buffalo of today is a great producer of milk with high fat and protein contents. The buffalo seen in the video is a prime example of this. She is seen here having had her 11th calf. To date her production average is 3000 kg’s of milk/ lactation at 8.4% fat & 5% protein. She is the dam of the Water Buffalo sire “Lallo” also pictured. Through the “IBMI”, the Italian selection index for Water Buffalo and its focus on milk yield and milk solids such performance has been achieved.

This high quality milk is very conducive to cheese production. It is used to produce cheeses such as Mozzarella. We at Dovea Genetics were happy to assist in bringing these genetics to a renowned Irish Water Buffalo farmer Johnny Lynch who runs Macroom Buffalo Mozzarella in Co. Cork. Mr. Lynch sourced the genetics from our counterparts Centro Tori Chiacchierini, a prominent provider of Water Buffalo semen in Perugia, Italy.
